Cities plan for ‘Serie’
BASEBALL: Caribbean championship comes to Mexicali

An unprecedented effort is being planned by a binational committee to facilitate the transportation of thousands of baseball fans across the U.S.-Mexico border during an international baseball tournament in Mexicali next year.

U.S. fans could be shuttled from the border in Calexico to Mexicali’s “El Nido” baseball stadium for a whole week in February, said Nora A. Badilla, director of the committee. The committee will seek cooperation from U.S. federal agencies to aid the passage of tourists on both sides of the border (a still vague component of the plan).

For the first time in its 35­year history, the tournament is scheduled to be played in Mexicali and it brought its mayor, Rodolfo Valdez, to Calexico City Hall on Monday morning.
